Malacocephalus laevis (Lowe, 1843)

Cosmopolita, habita águas dos oceanos Atlântico, Índico e Pacífico. No Atlântico Ocidental distribui-se do Golfo do México ao sul do Brasil. É uma espécie batidemersal, que vive no talude continental entre as profundidades de 200 e 1000 m, sendo mais comum entre 300 e 750 m. Atinge 700 mm de comprimento e alimenta-se de crustáceos e lulas (Bernardes et al. 2005).

Morphology:
Shape: elliptic. Anterior region: oblique to peaked (53%), oblique to peaked-round (36%), oblique to angled-round (11%). Posterior region: oblique-round (75%), oblique to peaked-round (25%). Dorsal edge: lobed to sinuate (83%), sinuate (8%), lobed (8%). Ventral edge: lobed to sinuate (67%), sinuate (19%), sinuate to entire (8%), lobed (6%). Profile: plane-convex (69%), biconvex (31%). Rostrum and antirostrum orientation: in agreement. Rostrum: underdeveloped. Antirostrum: underdeveloped (64%), absent (36%). Pseudorostrum: underdeveloped. Pseudoantirostrum: absent. Sulcus acusticus: position supramedian, orientation slightly ascending (61%), horizontal (33%), ascending (6%), opening ostiocaudal (58%), caudal (22%), pseudo-ostiocaudal (11%), para-ostial (8%), morphology homosulcoid, colliculum homomorphic, ostium elliptic, cauda elliptic.
